"Stargate Universe" starts with the evacuation through the stargate of a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians onto the spaceship Destiny. People are confused and frightened, tumbling over each other in a dark unknown gate room and getting things thrown at them through the stargate.
This scene shows the new concept of SGU. People act more real. They act like everyone of us would probably act like in the same situation, not like having-always-everything-under-control people.
"Air - part 1" introduces to the new characters of this series by switching between "Now" and "Past" until both timelines are in synch again. We get a brief intro about what kind of person the various characters are and why they are part of the evacuated group.
If you are into shallow, simply action driven plot where you know from the beginning who will solve which problem and nothing bad can really to the characters because they always win, then you might not like the new format of the stargate franchise.
This series is about people who are not trained for the situation they find themselves in. They show emotions, they show weakness, but also strength. They show character and the promise to grow.
There is still a lot of action and really cool special effects in the first episode to see.
If you look for action, tension, political schemes, visual effects, technology, entertainment and characters you can root for, this might be the right thing for you.
Watch "Air" and make up your own mind. Don't expect SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis feeling. This is Stargate Universe. Darker, more realistic, more drama and more unpredictable storyline.
(Note: the jumping between "now" and "past" is only used in part 1 to introduce the characters. It is not the plot format the series will follow for the other episodes.)
